It’s time to say goodbye to 2011 and welcome 2012 with a bang. Now is the time when you can really say if LinkedIn worked any good for you and your business during the past year. Finding out if it worked or not will be your key in improving your future social media strategies. If it did, pat your back and congratulate yourself for the great work. And if it didn't, don't be too dismayed. It's a brand new year which brings new opportunities to the table. Always remember that failure is a room for growth and improvement. This will definitely inspire you to set your priorities straight and work not just harder but smarter more than ever.

The lack of knowledge of how powerful LinkedIn is for networking and strengthening your brand reputation can lead to wrong success measurement. Shame to say this but there are still some folks who are not sure of what they’re getting themselves into.

Here are some easy peasy suggestions to refine your LinkedIn presence and productivity this 2012.

Tailor your LinkedIn connections - memberships and activity settings

Do you win lottery everyday according to those spam emails? I would probably be half as rich as Zuckerberg if those emails made any sense. Take some time to review all the groups that you have joined on LinkedIn. Rest assured, there will be at least over 5 groups that are not useful for you at all.

Remove the groups that are full of spam and that you don’t benefit from. Searching "LinkedIn group statistics" and looking for groups that have advanced in 2011 will help you locate target market or prospects either geographically or industry wise.

To modify your group activity settings, drag your mouse over your name on the top right corner of the page and click on settings. Here you can change and have control of your privacy settings and your visibility. You can also set the frequency of emails and the types of messages you’re willing to receive. My suggestion is to opt for a group update every week from most groups and probably choose a couple to get daily updates from.

Blog and associate your content into your LinkedIn profile

Content is king. If you’re confident that your blog represents you and your company just how exactly you want to present it, then take advantage of it. Integrate your content into your LinkedIn professional and company profiles. Your blog articles have a great potential on LinkedIn because of its massive SEO power and its Twitter integration through Signal.

Google has implemented a weighting system called the "panda factor". Google says that quality ranking factors are aimed at helping people find high quality sites by reducing the ranking of low- quality content. Unique and valuable content plus those that are rated on high "panda value" compete very well in ranking. Panda weighs sites like LinkedIn as high quality platforms.

Maximize the use of your LinkedIn Company Profile

As a general rule of thumb, don’t get confused between LinkedIn professional and Company profiles. The professional profile is meant for a person and the company profile is meant for companies and entities. The Company Profile Pages allow business owners or page admins to publish content for particular products or services and customize product/services to appropriate audiences. The layout gives companies the freedom to create a range of content offerings that include video, white paper URLs, as well as targeted landing pages for lead capture. LinkedIn members can also leave recommendations and reviews of products or services on Company Pages.

Promote your LinkedIn Company Page to all your customers through the other social media platforms that you’re on, your email signature and as well as your business cards. Make sure your company page showcases job opportunities, corporate messages, video, landing page links and your employees. All these fab backlinks utilizes the power of SEO.

LinkedIn Company Updates are awesome – use them!

Aside from the fact that your LinkedIn company profile updates are visible to your entire LinkedIn network – they also play a big role SEO wise because they are searchable via Google. That says it all, keep your company profile up-to-date to make sure that you’re maximizing awareness and engagement for your brand.  Company updates can also be linked with your company’s Twitter account, so updates appear to followers, your network and on Twitter.
